The Combat Zone
Story That Started It All
During a deployment to the Middle East, one of my best soldiers began showing signs of distraction and declining performance. In our environment — secure satellite communications supporting combat operations — even minor lapses in focus carried serious consequences.
He was carrying the weight of a family in financial crisis back home. His wife. His children. His inability to be there for them while being responsible for a mission that could not afford his distraction.
I coordinated with family services at our home base to intervene. I established a consistent communication cadence so he could stay connected to his family. And I watched something remarkable happen.
As stability returned at home — his focus came back. His confidence came back. His performance came back.
"People perform at their best when they feel seen, supported, and valued beyond their role."
That conviction has shaped every leadership decision I have made since — in the Army, in the DoD, in the healthcare C-suite, and now in the leaders I coach and speak to every week.
